Environmental Innovation Clinic at UMass Boston

January 25 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Course Description:

This course gives graduate students a new set of tools for and experience in finding and developing innovative approaches for addressing environmental problems. Students explore creativity from individual and team perspectives and identify opportunities for innovation within the context of real-world environmental challenges facing stakeholders. The course includes in-class workshops, readings, and group work on real-world cases solicited from a breadth of stakeholders. Students will explore various creativity methodologies and, through the application of transdisciplinary perspectives and innovative approaches, gain experience and expertise that will increase the level of innovation in individual program research. This course is a “clinic” and therefore students are expected to work in transdisciplinary teams to provide client-requested outcomes with the goal that the results of the clinic are implementable and can be expanded upon by the client moving forward.

The Clinic

This course integrates a “clinic” model which provides experiential learning to foster the growth of knowledge, management and leadership skills, and values while promoting the development of environmental solutions. Students will propose sustainable, innovative solutions to real environmental issues facing “clients” who are facing real problems. This is an intellectually demanding class and requires significant time management and dedication to serving the client’s needs. Project work will be undertaken in a highly cooperative, team-based, mutually supportive manner. The work done by transdisciplinary student teams will include formulating phased plans for project solution development and implementation. Upon completion of the class students will be expected to submit a product/project plan and a presentation/ “pitch” session to stakeholders.
